Road Planing

Efficient, accurate road planing (milling) is the foundation of every successful resurfacing scheme. At JC Surfacing we remove worn asphalt layers to controlled depths, leaving a clean, well-keyed surface ready to accept new binder and surface courses. Our calibrated equipment, disciplined traffic management and experienced crews ensure tidy edges, precise tie-ins and dependable programmes on everything from supermarket forecourts to A‑road night works.

What Is Road Planing?

Road planing uses rotating drums fitted with tungsten carbide picks to mill asphalt to a specified depth. This process restores levels, removes defects and provides a textured surface that promotes strong adhesion for new materials. Planing is faster and cleaner than full excavation, reduces waste and allows traffic to return sooner after resurfacing.

Where We Work

  • Public highways and estate roads
  • Retail and commercial car parks
  • Industrial yards and loading aprons
  • Airside and ports (with permits)
  • Housing developments and private roads

Our Capabilities

  • Precision depth control for variable milling and level corrections
  • Edge planers and joint-cutters for crisp kerb reveals and day joints
  • Integrated dust suppression and on-board conveyors to sweepers and tippers
  • Patch planing for potholes and utility reinstatement
  • Full carriageway removal ahead of machine-laid resurfacing

Planing Process

  1. Survey & Method – We confirm required depths, tie-in locations, drainage falls and access constraints.
  2. Traffic Management – Phased closures, diversions and pedestrian routes to keep people safe and sites productive.
  3. Milling – Uniform, controlled removal to the agreed level; edges trimmed and joints prepared.
  4. Sweeping – Mechanical sweepers remove fines; bonding surfaces are left clean and well-textured.
  5. Waste Handling – Arisings loaded to tippers and transferred to approved facilities. RAP recycling used where specification allows.
  6. Handover – Areas signed off for binder/surface course or temporarily made safe pending resurfacing.

Why Accurate Planing Matters

  • Delivers smooth final levels and ride quality
  • Improves binder bond and extends pavement life
  • Reduces material waste and programme risk
  • Protects ironwork and kerbs with clean interfaces

Sustainability

We segregate and recycle planed arisings as RAP wherever feasible. Warm-mix asphalt options and optimised logistics further reduce carbon. Clean, well-managed sites minimise nuisance for neighbours.

Case Examples

Estate Road Tie-Ins – Nottinghamshire

Variable-depth planing corrected long-standing ponding issues. Subsequent machine-laid surface course achieved excellent evenness and drainage.

Retail Car Park Refresh – Lincoln

Night planing with phased bays allowed the store to trade normally. Clean joints and swift sweeping enabled same-night resurfacing and remarking.

Industrial Yard – Derbyshire

Heavy-duty patches were milled and reinstated with binder/surface courses to combat rutting from HGV turning movements.

FAQs

  • How noisy is planing? We schedule out-of-hours where needed and use suppression to reduce impact.
  • Do you provide traffic management? Yes, or we work with your framework provider under an agreed plan.
  • Can you plane around ironwork? Yes, we trim edges and adjust covers as part of resurfacing packages.
  • What happens to the arisings? They’re recycled where permitted; transfer notes provided.
